The Seattle Seafair Clowns Organization, established in association with the Graduates Club of Seattle University, have been an integral part of Seattle's Seafair Celebration for over 50 years.
The Seattle Seafair Clowns entertain thousands of people every year at Seafair's neighborhood parades and festivals. We also take the spirit of the Seafair to those who can not attend by visit nursing homes, hospitals, and care centers year-round.
In April 1953, ten men with a common bond and a common problem started meeting around a conference table. Their bond was formed at Seattle University. The problem was limited public recognition of a degree from Seattle University.
The solution was the formation of the Graduates Club of Seattle University. Walter VanCamp, Greater Seattle's first managing director, approached the Grad's Club looking for an idea that would be beneficial to both sides. Greater Seattle, predecessor to Seafair, was looking for talent and new ideas. Mutual discussion lead to the formation of the Seafair Clowns. One of the founding members, George Anderson Sr,. is still with the group today.
During the typical Seafair there are over 125 hours of events, including visits to nearly 25 nursing homes, hospitals, and care centers. These activities are performed alongside appearances at over 20 festivals and events.
Our year-round support of charitable organizations is not limited to the Seattle area or even the Puget Sound region. The Seafair Clowns do what we can to help those in need of a little laughter throughout Washington, Oregon, British Columbia and Mexico.
